Word of the Day

I would love for my school to implement words of the day.  I think we could easily have a word of the day on announcements in the morning and afternoon and teachers can use it throughout the day in their own classroom.  I've done this on the classroom level, but would like to see it done as a campus.  It would require full participation and consistency for the word meaning to last.

Here are some ideas for Word of the Day.  I've personally used the password idea- I taught and used a word throughout the day, then the following day students had to either tell me what it means, use it in a sentence, or give me a synonym/antonym before entering the room.  Other teachers loved this idea and would ask my students about the word as they passed them in the hallway.  It would be wonderful it there was full staff participation.  I plan on designing a vocabulary board in my classroom this year.  I teach 4th grade so it would include idioms and analogies as well.  The possibilities are endless with this idea.  What words would we use is often the question that teachers ask.  The important thing is to not get overwhelmed and feel as though you must teach ALL THE WORDS to students in a given school year.  Focus on words that connect to a book you are reading that week or a mentor text.  Focus on words that relate to character traits if students are struggling with those.
